MKE Startup News: CIAN turns discovery into postpartum hemorrhage test

Featured news
September 11, 2026

Ramani Ramchandran, PhD, a professor of cell biology, neurobiology and anatomy at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), was studying blood vessel health when his research team found something it was not looking for.

The discovery could eventually help doctors identify women at risk for postpartum hemorrhage before they give birth. The serious childbirth complication, defined as severe blood loss after delivery, affects an estimated 1% to 5% of births.

Milwaukee-based CIAN was founded in 2023 to commercialize discoveries emerging from Ramchandran’s research into cilia, tiny structures found on endothelial cells that line blood vessels. When blood flow becomes turbulent, those cilia can break off in a process known as deciliation, releasing proteins into the bloodstream. The company is developing blood tests designed to measure proteins released into the bloodstream and use them as indicators of underlying vascular health.
