MKE Startup News: Autonomous Materials Labs aims to compress materials discovery timeline

Featured news
August 5, 2026

Fusion reactors need metals that can survive extreme heat. Hypersonic aircraft need materials that can withstand tremendous stress. In both cases, and dozens more, the technology is often waiting on a material that doesn’t exist yet and the bottleneck isn’t imagination, it’s the years it takes to develop and manufacture a new material.

Autonomous Materials Labs believes it can compress that timeline with a single integrated machine.

The company was founded by mechanical engineering and materials science researcher Lianyi Chen, PhD, Benjamin Patrick Bremmer and Ali Nabaa, a PhD candidate in mechanical engineering. The trio launched the venture in 2026 after participating in the National Science Foundation’s I-Corps program at the University of Wisconsin.
